5 roof maintenance tasks every homeowner should do

June 20265 min readDIY-friendly

A roof rarely fails all at once — it fails from small things ignored for years. These five tasks take an afternoon a couple of times a year, cost almost nothing, and can add a decade to your roof's life. Most can be done from the ground or a stable ladder.

1. Clean your gutters (twice a year)

Clogged gutters back water up under the shingles at the eaves — the #1 cause of fascia rot and ice dams. Clear them every spring and fall, and after big storms. While you're there, check that downspouts carry water well away from the foundation.

2. Trim overhanging branches

Branches scrape granules off shingles in the wind and drop leaves that hold moisture. They're also a highway for squirrels and raccoons. Keep limbs at least 6–10 feet off the roof.

3. Look for trouble from the ground (with binoculars)

Twice a year, walk the perimeter and scan the roof: missing or curling shingles, dark streaks, lifted flashing around the chimney and vents. You don't need to climb up — most warning signs are visible from below. Not sure what you're seeing? Compare against our roof warning-signs guide.

4. Check the attic after heavy rain

Your attic tells the truth before your ceiling does. After a downpour, go up with a flashlight and look for damp decking, water stains, or daylight. Also check that insulation is dry and vents aren't blocked — poor ventilation cooks shingles from below and shortens their life.

5. Clear moss and debris

Moss and piles of leaves trap moisture against shingles, especially on shaded slopes. Gently clear debris and treat moss early — never pressure-wash, which strips the protective granules.

The 10-minute payoff: Homeowners who do these basics often get 3–5 extra years out of a roof. That's thousands of dollars deferred — and fewer surprise leaks.

When maintenance isn't enough

If you're finding the same problems every season, your roof may be near the end. Run your home through the cost calculator to set a budget, and read up on what a replacement really costs so you're ready before it becomes an emergency.
